Nine days later, Doug lost his life when his ascending aorta ruptured

In September 2004, Doug Grieshop was a strong young man. He was a loving husband and a proud father. Doug lost his life suddenly when his aorta ruptured while at work on September 20th. He had experienced chest pain 15 months earlier, but the bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aortic aneurysm in his chest were not detected at that time.

The Bicuspid Aortic Foundation's mission includes alerting individuals and families to the dangers associated with the bicuspid aortic valve, the most common birth defect in the heart. Doug was a victim of one of those dangers - an aneurysm of his aorta, above his heart.

Too often sudden death due to aortic dissection or rupture in the chest may be confused with a massive heart attack. In Doug's case there is no doubt, because an autopsy was performed. There in his heart was the aortic valve with only two leaflets. And above his heart was the thin, weakened tissue of his ascending aorta that had bulged dangerously until it tore and ruptured.
