September 2006 TAAD Awareness Month

The Bicuspid Aortic Foundation is very grateful to Mayor Catherine DeYoung and the Laguna Niguel City Council for their assistance in increasing public awareness of TAAD through this proclamation. In keeping with this year's theme, "Our Families, Our Friends", with greater awareness the lives of our families, our friends, and our neighbors may be saved.

P R O C L A M A T I O N


PROCLAIMING
THORACIC AORTIC ANEURYSM AND
DISSECTION (TAAD) AWARENESS MONTH
SEPTEMBER, 2006

WHEREAS, each year, Californians lose their lives or are injured by Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection (TAAD), the bulging or tearing of the aorta in the chest; and

WHEREAS, without performing an autopsy, deaths due to heart attacks cannot be distinguised from TAAD, making the actual death toll unknown ; and

WHEREAS, the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation observes TAAD Awareness Month in September in order to foster greater understanding of the causes and treatment of TAAD. A large segment of the population may be affected by TAAD through its association with Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease, estimated to occur in up to 2% of the population ; and

WHEREAS, TAAD also occurs in many indviduals who have other various connective tissue disorders, hypertension or other risk factors ; and

WHEREAS, TAAD represents a life threatening condition that is also highly treatable due to advances in diagnostic, medical, and surgical technologies. Proactive diagnosis and appropriate treatment of TAAD minimize the incidence of emergency situations, dramatically improving survival and quality of life; and

WHEREAS, there is a great need for increased public awarenes of TAAD's known risk factors, including possible inheritance in families, and the benefits of accurate diagnostic testing, appropriate medical care and expert surgical treatment.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Catherine DeYoung, on behalf of the Laguna Niguel City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of September as "Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection (TAAD) Awareness Month in the City of Laguna Niguel to encourage broader understanding of TAAD and to promote early detection ad the preservation of health and well being of our citizens.
