Each year during the month of September, the Bicuspid Aortic Foundation will place special emphasis on increasing the general awareness of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm and Dissection (TAAD).  The development of an aneurysm or the risk of aortic dissection may often be silent, and having knowledge of what the risk factors are,  the tests used to evalutate the aorta, and the available options for treatment is important in identifying and treating TAAD proactively.

TAAD is a general term that encompasses aortic aneurysm and dissection in the chest. There are several underlying conditions associated with TAAD, including Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease and other syndromes associated with abnormal connective tissue, hypertension, etc. In all cases, appropriate treatment of the diseased aorta is required to minimize the risk of a life-threatening emergency while continuing to live an active, productive life.
