February 2007 The February 2007 issue of Annals of Thoracic Surgery contains an article entitled "Fifty Years of Aortic Surgery" by S.Westaby and G.B. Bartoni. This was presented at Aortic Surgery Symposium X in April 2006. Following is a link to the abstract Fifty years of thoracic aortic surgery: lessons learned and future directions The abstract is brief, but each sentence is rich in meaning. Events in the past fifty years have brought us to a great point in time in the treatment of thoracic aortic diesease. Progress in understanding the nature of thoracic aortic disease and exacting refinement of surgical technique have made possible the saving of many lives. Aortic surgery is difficult. However, as mentioned in Dr. Westaby's paper, it is now its own specialty. And those who specialize in it continue to accomplish amazing things. Along with others, I was privileged to gather with the aortic surgeons on the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Board: Dr. Randall Griepp, Dr. Teruhisa Kazui, Dr. Nicholas Kouchoukos, and Dr. Sharo Raissi. Their warmth, humility, and kindness touched me deeply. With great energy, these aortic surgeons continue their pioneering work on behalf of those who are so vulnerable - those with BAVD and other forms of TAAD. |
