Meeting Together in Southern California
This month finds my own excitement building in anticipation of two very
special days in September. These days are set aside for a very important reason:
to meet the needs of families and friends touched by BAVD and TAAD. Last year's
event along with thoughtful suggestions from many through out the year have
helped us plan for several informational sessions as well as time to meet others
and share common experiences.
There will be coverage of some very
important topics: state-of-the-art imaging options available today, Acute
Aortic Syndrome, Familial TAAD, BAVD, and the risk of brain aneurysms. Practical
suggestions for requesting and organizing medical records and generally living
with aortic disease will also be shared. In presenting these topics, the
Foundation is fortunate to have the expertise of our Scientific Advisory Board
members coupled with the insight and experience of individuals and families. Together
they are the essence of the Foundation's mission, bringing information,
expertise, and hope to us all.
This
picture, taken at last year's Conference,
is a wonderful expression of the tremendous power of physicians and patients
working together to increase awareness and save lives. Carrie Mettler (left)
is pictured with Dr. Wouter Schievink, who in January 2004 performed surgery
on an aneurysm in Carrie's brain. Carrie continues to live with a carefully monitored
bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aortic aneurysm. Dr. Schievink's
pioneering work regarding brain aneurysms and BAVD saved Carrie's life,
and Carrie's willingness to share her experience has brought both awareness
and hope to others with BAVD who may develop brain aneurysms.
For those
planning to attend, you may contact the Foundation by email or phone as listed
in the Contact section below. Please include the names of those planning to
attend and an email address and contact phone number where you may be reached.
There
is no charge to attend the Conference sessions. Costs to attendees
would include expenses for travel, lodging, and meals. The conference sessions
will be held at the California Yacht Club, Marina del Rey, California. Following
are links to the location as well as lodging possibilities in the area.
Space is limited, so please contact us soon to make your reservation.
No doubt the sun will shine in southern California this September as it typically
does. But beyond that, there will be a special glow as we meet together.
It is that special glow that surrounds us when we find knowledge, understanding,
compassion, and hope.
I look forward to meeting in September,
when together we will create a climate
of hope.
Sincerely,
Arlys Velebir
