March 2007 Most of us have never heard of a bicuspid aortic valve until somehow it touches our lives. Perhaps we have heard of an aneurysm. We may know about bleeding in the brain and possibly even "AAA", Aortic Abdominal Aneurysm. But rarely are aneurysms or tearing/bleeding of the aorta mentioned in connection with the chest. Just how often are BAVD or TAAD reported in the press in connection with individuals? BAVD and TAAD in the Press, also found on the Foundation home page, contains links to accounts found simply by searching the Internet. One of those links was originally to a column published in the Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal, February 8, 2007. It told the story of a young woman named Carrie Godbey. That link is no longer available. However, following is another account of Carrie and her family. Reading this, we feel we know her - the caring teacher, loving wife, and expectant mother. There is mention of a bicuspid aortic valve, which was present along with a condition that affects women only, Turner's Syndrome. In the eighth month of Carrie's pregnancy, there was severe chest pain. We read of her delivering twins, a son and a daughter. She was able to kiss them. Nine hours later she was dead. This is the heart break of thoracic aortic disease. BAVD and TAAD continue to cause suffering and loss to many. May we continue our efforts to help one another, creating a climate of hope.
