Bicuspid Aortic Valve
Open BAV
The opening of a BAV
resembles the open mouth
of a fish, leading to the
term “fish mouth” valve.
Endocarditis
Endocarditis and BAV
Endocarditis is an infection of the heart valve. Once it
develops, depending on the organism involved, it can be
very difficult to treat and is potentially deadly.
Intravenous antibiotics are used, and surgical repair or
replacement of the valve also may be necessary.
Those with abnormal heart valves, such as bicuspid aortic
valves, and those whose valves have been replaced by an
artificial valve (prosthesis) are prone to valve infection.
Bicuspid Aortic Valve
Closed BAV
When closed, it may be
difficult to distinguish a
BAV from an aortic valve
with all three leaflets.
Aortic Aneurysm
The aorta in those from BAV
families may be enlarged
and balloon out, which is
called an aneurysm.
