Creating a Climate of Hope, an Atmosphere of Caring, and Information for All
Bicuspid Aortic Valve
Open BAV
The opening of a BAV
resembles the open mouth
of a fish, leading to the
term “fish mouth” valve.
How is BAV treated?
For those with bicuspid aortic valve and other trileaflet
members of their family requiring treatment, medical
treatment is focused primarily on blood pressure optimization.
The aortic valve and aorta are monitored, and may require
surgery at some point. Monitoring is done using imaging
technology to assess the heart and aorta.
At some point, surgical intervention may be needed. Some
individuals may have multiple surgeries over the course of
their lives.
In addition, the existence of any other congenital heart
defects, issues with other heart valves such as the mitral
valve, and any heart arrhythmias are also identified and
treated as appropriate.
The potential for brain aneurysm development is also
recognized.
All of these areas may be included when planning the course
of treatment for an individual. There may be a great deal of
variation between individuals, and a focus on developing a
course of treatment suited to that individual is based on the
results of tests along with discussion of family history and
lifestyle of each individual.
Bicuspid Aortic Valve
Closed BAV
When closed, it may be
difficult to distinguish a
BAV from an aortic valve
with all three leaflets.
BAV and Athletes
It is very possible that
someone with BAV is
present at sporting events
of all kinds. Many of them
are serious athletes.
BAV is Common
It is very likely that you
know someone with BAV.
It could even exist in your
family or extended family
without you knowing about
it.
